Aaron makes YT proud - Second podium for the YT Mob in Cairns
The Downhill World Cup found a relaxed ending in Cairns: On Sunday, the YT Mob organized a proper barbecue for friends and our Australian customers at the YT pit. Our team riders Aaron Gwin, Angel Suarez, Martin Whiteley and the whole team behind the Mob spent an amazing afternoon with YT fans, having beers, steaks and some tech talk, true to the motto Good Times.
Aaron himself was quite happy with his race result: “Another great week of racing is in the books! Really enjoyed my time down here in Cairns and I’m stoked to get up on the podium with another solid ride. I’m feeling better every weekend and I’m excited to get back to work in this break we have now, so we can come out swinging at the next round in Fort William”.
After taking the win at the first World Cup race in Lourdes and stepping onto the podium, the first big pressure relieved from Aaron, his team and - of course - ourselves. So the big question was: how would the Mob perform at the second race in Cairns? On the other end of the world the sun was burning and humidity was extremely high. The tight track with its tricky rock garden belongs to the most technical ones in the Downhill World Cup.
Practice runs started with heavy rain and slippery terrain but Aaron managed to qualify as third. Team mate Angel Suarez crashed hard during his last practice run and was only able to do the qualifying under worst pain. He landed in 83th position and missed the finals by inches. We keep our fingers crossed that he will be able to show his talent at the next race in Fort William.
On race day all eyes were on Aaron. The Australian local riders submitted impressing results on the bone-dry track. So did Loic Bruni, who started right before Aaron. The Frenchman didn’t let himself be put under pressure, stayed on his bike, did a smooth run and landed on the hot seat. Aaron was superfast on the track, surfed easily over the rock garden and sprinted over the finish line, with a total time of 3:26.648. As it turned out this was not enough to win the race but was good for a respectable 4th place, 2.952 sec behind the best time of Loic Bruni. This being another great result for the YT Mob, Aaron keeps leading the overall ranking with 370 points.
The next race will take part on 5th June on the legendary downhill track in Fort William.
